Give students practice in answering the types of questions used in standardized tests. High-interest stories, primary source documents, and comprehension questions will hold students' attention and encourage the use of higher order thinking skills. The content is correlated to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

My child received an assignment from his third grade teacher from this book that asked the question "Should people other than police and the military be allowed to own guns?" This question had nothing to do with the reading passage. The passage itself was supposed to be about the invention of gunpowder but was clearly a propaganda piece meant to scare children. This subject matter and discussion topic are inappropriate for third graders who do not have the required knowledge to possibly give an informed response to the question. The teacher used this material to fish for the political beliefs of the student's parents. I have taken this up with the district and intend on having this textbook banned from use in the district.

I really like how this book has questions based on different levels of Bloom's Taxonomy. I can easily extend it for my higher groups, but the articles are interesting for my struggling readers.
